Thoracic Surgery Residency Program
The Thoracic Surgery Program at the University of Ottawa accepts residents who have completed five years of training in general surgery or cardiac surgery. This component of training will first need to be assessed by the Credentials Committee of the Royal College, which will rule on the amount of further training required for certification in general thoracic surgery.
Our two-year residency program in thoracic surgery is based at The Ottawa Hospital (General Campus) and is closely linked with the University of Ottawa Heart Institute. This is a well-structured program with an excellent multidisciplinary approach to the treatment of thoracic diseases. Specialists in pulmonary pathology, thoracic radiology, pulmonary medicine, thoracic surgery, pulmonary rehabilitation and thoracic oncology play an active role in your training.
There are regular multidisciplinary rounds in thoracic oncology, pulmonary pathology-radiology and didactic lectures. A good balance between education and service characterizes the program. In-service teaching is done by both full-time and hospital-based staff. You undergo interviews and both written and oral examinations every three months to assess your progress. You are encouraged to participate in clinical research projects.
The selection of residents usually takes place in October for the following year.
