Division of Thoracic Surgery

Clinical Programs

Our division collaborates with other medical teams on particular programs and services at The Ottawa Hospital.

Thoracic Oncology Program

We have a multidisciplinary team that works together for the efficient diagnosis and treatment of tumours of the lung, esophagus, mediastinum, pleura and chest wall. The multidisciplinary team consists of thoracic surgeons, chest radiologists, thoracic oncologists, respiratory physicians, thoracic nurses and allied nursing care, and thoracic anaesthetists. There is a strong clinical and academic collaboration between The Ottawa Hospital Thoracic Oncology Program and Cancer Care Ontario. This program treats more than 7,000 patients, receiving more than 1,500 new patients each year.

Benign Esophageal Diseases

In 1990, our faculty members, working at The Ottawa Hospital, established an Esophageal Function Laboratory for the objective functional assessment of benign disorders of the esophagus. Today, approximately 750 patients per year are seen in this laboratory. The Division of Thoracic Surgery provides high-quality surgical treatment for these benign disorders. Telephone: (613) 737-8899 ext. 74036.

Surgical Treatment of Pulmonary Emphysema

A multidisciplinary team of thoracic surgeons, respiratory physicians, thoracic anaesthetists,
rehabilitation medicine professionals, and physiotherapists was established in 1995 for
assessment and selection of patients with pulmonary emphysema who would best benefit
from surgery.

Video-Assisted Thoracoscopic Surgery (VATS)

Our thoracic surgeons are involved in Video-Assisted Thoracoscopic Surgery (VATS). This surgery is for the treatment of excessive underarm sweating, recurrent spontaneous pneumothoraces, and resection of posterior mediastinal tumours in selected patients.

Surgical Treatment of Generalized Myasthenia Gravis by Thymectomy
(Transcervical or Transsternal)

These patients are referred by neurologists and undergo pre-operative preparation by our thoracic surgeons. Post-operative care is carried out by neurologists.

Thoracic Outlet Syndrome

The Division of Thoracic Surgery provides surgical treatment in selected cases of
Thoracic-Outlet Syndrome.

Diagnostic and Therapeutic Interventional Thoracic Radiology

Our thoracic surgeons work in collaboration with the Department of Radiological Sciences which has established a full range of diagnostic and therapeutic interventional radiological procedures for the efficient care of patients with chest diseases.
