Requirements
Each student must complete a year long research project worth 10 credits in the laboratory of a member of the Department of Cellular and Molecular Medicine and undertake an additional 20 credits of course work.
- Research Component
The research component of the program (PHS 4219 - Honour’s Thesis) requires that students devote the equivalent of two full days per week in the laboratory at a minimum. Students generally devote more time to lab work than is required. The results of the research project are presented in a thesis submitted at the end of the second term (see Guidelines for Preparing a Thesis).
The Department of Cellular and Molecular Medicine maintains an active and well-funded research program that includes studies in the following areas: cardiovascular, skeletal muscle, central and peripheral nervous system, gastrointestinal, endocrine, reproductive and renal. Researchers have laboratories in the Health Sciences Building (Roger Guindon), the Ottawa Hospital General and Civic campuses, and elsewhere. Students are advised to read the research interests of potential supervisors on their web home pages for projects that interest them (see Links to Potential Supervisors). The Honour’s Program Coordinator (mlafont3@uottawa.ca) can assist you in finding a supervisor if you are unsure where to look.
- Course Component
In addition to the research component, students must undertake 20 credits of course work.
PHS 4326S (Compulsory): Students must register for this 3 credit course. Click here for description.
A minimum of 6 additional credits, but no more than 11*, must be chosen from within the Department of Cellular and Molecular Medicine. The Department offers specific 4000/5000 level courses designed to introduce students to current knowledge in advanced physiology (see Course Descriptions).
*Courses offered by other departments may be useful for students whose research project addresses topics not covered by currently offered CMM courses. Your research supervisor may recommend such a course. These must be approved by the Program Director.
