![]() GENERAL INFORMATIONThe University of Ottawa has recently approved the formation of a new Centre focusing on research into neuromuscular disorders. The mission statement of this newly created Centre is to "advance our basic understanding of neuromuscular and related disorders in order to enhance human health through the development and implementation of therapies for these diseases". The creation of this Centre is timely particularly if we consider that neuromuscular diseases and conditions represent a significant burden on the Canadian health care system. This is well exemplified by considering the relatively high incidence of muscle atrophy, seen in aging citizens, immobilized individuals, cancer and diabetic patients, as well as the devastating impact of childhood neuromuscular diseases such as Duchenne muscular dystrophy. |
